Yanchuan Shi
A/Prof Yanchuan Shi is a medically trained scientist and currently leads the Neuroendocrinology Group at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. She holds the position of Conjoint Associate Professor within the School of Clinical Medicine, St Vincent’s Healthcare Clinical Campus, Faculty of Medicine and Health, UNSW Sydney, Australia.
With a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine from China, Dr Shi pursued a PhD in bone and skeletal research at UNSW Sydney after a term as a visiting scholar at IMVS/Royal Adelaide Hospital under a WHO fellowship. She earned her PhD in 2006 and conducted her postdoc training at the Eating Disorders Research Laboratory within the Neuroscience Division at the Garvan Institute. She was promoted to Group Leader of Neuroendocrinology in 2014, leading her independent research. In 2012, Dr Shi successfully requalified for her Australian medical licence, enabling her to practice medicine in Australia. Dr Shi’s research encompasses neuroendocrine regulation of appetite, adipose tissue thermogenesis, pancreatic beta cell function, and obesity-related CVD, with a special focus on the neuropeptide Y (NPY) system. Her work also extends to exploring the potential impact of non-caloric nutrients on metabolism, as well as investigating inter-organ crosstalk in obesity and diabetes.
